  • Alexandra Saraiva on ‘Expresso Imobiliário’ – SIC Notícias on behalf o the curatorial team of the ‘Habitar Portugal 74|24’ exhibition

On 4 April, DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte researcher Alexandra Saraiva was interviewed on the SIC Notícias programme ‘Expresso Imobiliário’ to present the exhibition ‘Habitar Portugal 74|24’ on behalf of the curatorial team (Alexandra Saraiva, Célia Gomes, and Rui Leão). The exhibition, on display at the CCB until 26 April, presents a panoramic overview in tribute to half a century of democracy in Portugal, thus serving as an important document for our country's contemporary history. It features a selection of 100 works of varying scale and programmatic expression, structured around three thematic axes — ‘Architecture as a Political Gesture’, ‘The Persistence of Memory’, and ‘Ruptures and New Configurations’, aiming to interpret Portuguese architecture beyond its material dimension, highlighting its role as a cultural, social, and territorial practice, as an act of debate and resistance, stemming from a practice of questioning and a dialectical methodology, which transitioned from clandestinity to studios and schools, guided by a generation of architects and professors who influenced subsequent generations.

  • 'Lucio Costa Archive': an exhibition curated by Ana Vaz Milheiro

The exhibition Lucio Costa Archive  draws on the personal collection of the renowned urban planner, which was donated by his family to the Casa da Arquitetura in 2021. Curated by Ana Vaz Milheiro in collaboration with Leonor Matos Silva (both researchers at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte), Lucio Costa Archive  opens on 18 April at Casa da Arquitetura, featuring two days of free activities, and will run until 13 September 2026. Organised into six sections – "Family", "Writings", "Portugal, " Pilot Plan", "Brasília" and "Drawing" – Lucio Costa Archive  constructs a journey richly illustrated by the urban planner and architect’s private life, yet opens windows onto other aspects and spheres of his public and professional life, notably the trips he made to our country between the 1940s and 1960s, partly documented in the famous Portugal Little Sketchbooks.   With the originals of the Pilot Plan of Brasília, rarely exhibited in Europe, at the heart of this exhibition, Lucio Costa Archive  also proposes another challenge: that of “confronting the contemporary”, that is, the challenge of re-examining this legacy in light of the questions raised today regarding the motivations, influences and innovative drive of the man who created a new capital for Brazil and left an indelible mark on contemporary architecture.   The opening of the exhibition is accompanied by the launch of two books: a richly illustrated volume of the same name, which explores and expands on the collection, featuring essays and texts by Portuguese and Brazilian authors; and the book Raízes do Futuro: Lucio Costa e a tradição moderna , by Guilherme Wisnik, a completely revised edition of the original book published in 2001 by Cosac Naify, enriched with material from the Lucio Costa Collection / Casa da Arquitetura.   More Info and Opening Programme here

  • Book launch of 'Mulheres, Terra e Revolução', authored by Rita Calvário and Cecília Honório

DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte and the publisher Tinta-da-China are pleased to announce the launch of the book Mulheres, Terra e Revolução , authored by Rita Calvário (DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte) and Cecília Honório (CHAM-NOVA FCSH). The event will take place on 24 April 2026 at 7:00 PM , at Casa Capitão   in Lisbon, and will be preceded at 6:00 PM by the screening of a documentary of the same name, directed by the authors. Following the screening, the book will be presented by Fernando Oliveira Baptista , Emeritus Full Professor at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Lisbon) and a key figure during the Revolution. As Minister of Agriculture in 1975, he played a pivotal role in drafting the Agrarian Reform laws and in supporting farmers’ movements. Part of the project Gendered power relations in agriculture: how rural women are facing gender inequality and struggling for more just and sustainable agri-food systems – the case of Portugal , the book 'Mulheres, Terra e Revolução' (Women, Land, and Revolution) reveals how the April Revolution reached rural Portugal, giving voice to the women who, from the North to the South, fought for land, for rights, and for more dignified lives. Between the large estates of the South and the family farming of the North, these women organized, resisted the dictatorship, took part in the Agrarian Reform, and transformed their communities. Drawing on both written sources and oral testimonies, the book recovers silenced histories and shows how rural women were active protagonists in the revolutionary process. Through a gender perspective, it highlights continuities, ruptures, and the construction of women’s political identities, revealing that ‘they were there too’  — and that their contribution is essential to understanding the Revolution in the rural world. • Book Launch of 'Transgressive City-Making and Governance: Housing Struggles, Occupations and Evictions in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area', authored by Saila-Maria Saaristo

We are pleased to announce the launch of the book Transgressive City-Making and Governance: Housing Struggles, Occupations and Evictions in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, authored by the DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte's researcher, Saila-Maria Saaristo. The event will be part of the International Conference 'Portuguese/Global Urban Studies' , organized by the Urban Transitions Hub, ICS-ULisboa, CIES-Iscte, Iscte-IUL, and CICS.NOVA.IPLeiria, and will take place on 22 April 2026 , at 4:00 PM , in the ICS-ULisboa auditorium (ground floor). The session is open to the public and will include contributions from Antonio Gori, Rita Cachado, and Simone Tulumello. Transgressive City-Making and Governance delves into the pressing global issue of housing exclusion and forced evictions, using Lisbon as a case study. This book, based on a 15-month engaged ethnography, critically examines council housing occupations and evictions, revealing how these practices challenge neoliberal urban governance and put forward alternative forms of urban citizenship. Exploring gendered, classed, and racialised dynamics, it sheds light on the transformative potential of housing occupations and the role of social movements in contesting systemic exclusion. It is essential reading for those interested in housing rights, social justice, and urban governance. More info: https://www.cies.iscte-iul.pt/np4/4674.html

  • International Conference 'Mulheres, Mundos do Trabalho e Cidadania – Diferentes Olhares, Outras Perspetivas'

The II International Conference Mulheres, Mundos do Trabalho e Cidadania – Diferentes Olhares, Outras Perspetivas , with the objective of deepening knowledge on issues inherent to women’s work, employment, and activism, will take place from 22 to 25 October 2025, at the Alcântara Library – José Dias Coelho, in Lisbon. The conference will be held in person. However, so that everyone who wishes to may join, the Organizing Committee foresees, on an absolutely exceptional basis, the possibility of holding a maximum of three remote sessions via the Zoom platform. These will take place on 21 October and are intended for those unable to attend in person. As Michelle Perrot (1987) and Sylvie Schweitzer (2002) have demonstrated, women have always worked. They have also always written their history, as Geneviève Fraisse (1979) and Françoise Thébaud (1998) state. And they have equally participated actively in society. Karen Offen (2000, 2010) and Florence Rochefort (2018), from a European and global perspective, demonstrate how feminisms agitate societies in time and space, aiming for the emancipation of women and the struggle for equality between men and women, whether within the framework of capitalism or from the perspective of human emancipation, because, as José Carlos Mariátegui (1924) stated, feminism has “various colours, diverse tendencies”. A history began in Seneca Falls, with the 1848 Women’s Rights Convention, framed by the struggle against abolitionism and the defence of political, social, and economic rights for women, demands later continued by many authors, such as Mary Beard (2018) or Françoise Vergès (2023), who conceptualize feminisms on a global level. In Portugal, many women from the most diverse social classes have participated at a political and social level since the 19th century and, with the New Portuguese Letters , Maria Isabel Barreno, Maria Teresa Horta, and Maria Velho da Costa, who opposed and resisted the Salazarist dictatorship, demonstrated the false neutral in the writing of history and in the vision of humanity, contributing to a new citizenship where gender discriminations were called into question and began to be eliminated. We are currently navigating an extremely tight curve in History, and with the approaching times set to be of great challenges, particularly for women, while fear settles into societies. It is in this context that the II International Conference “Women, Worlds of Work and Citizenship – Different Views, Other Perspectives” will be held, with the objective of deepening knowledge on issues inherent to women’s work and employment, as well as their activism. 📅 21 October  - online format 📅 22, 23, 24, and 25 October  - in-person format 📍 Alcântara Library – José Dias Coelho, Lisbon More Info: https://confmulheres2025.great-site.net/

The activity examined current youth employment metrics alongside the latest projections concerning the risk of job displacement driven by automation. Teresa Marat-Mendes promoted the Atelier de Projeto Final de Arquitetura (Architecture Final Project Studio), a space dedicated to showcasing the research of Integrated Master's students. These projects focused on the critical relationship between architecture and the food system, seeking to address a fundamental question: how can housing, urban spaces, and regional territories be planned to support a more sustainable system? DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte thanks the involved researchers for their participation and commitment to bringing scientific research closer to a younger audience, inspiring and enlightening future generations of university students.

  • 'The Paradox of Trust: How Leadership, Commitment, and Inertia Shape Sustainability Behavior in the Workplace': an article co-authored by Winston Silvestre

The article ' The Paradox of Trust: How Leadership, Commitment, and Inertia Shape Sustainability Behavior in the Workplace ’ , co-authored by Winston Silvestre  (DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte researcher), Sérgio Begnini and Isabel Abreu has been published by MDPI  in the  Journal of Administrative Sciences. This study explores the factors driving employees’ sustainability-switching behaviors by integrating the Push, Pull, and Mooring (PPM) model with the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA). A quantitative, cross-sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of 132 professionals actively involved in organizational sustainability initiatives across diverse industries and global regions. The findings reveal that leadership commitment significantly fosters both affective and normative employee commitments, with normative commitment positively influencing SSB. Surprisingly, organizational trust showed a negative impact on SSB, suggesting that employees may delegate responsibility for sustainability to the organization when trust is high. Inertia emerged as a strong barrier to behavioral change, independently inhibiting sustainability efforts. The study highlights the complex dynamics among leadership, trust, and inertia, offering practical insights for organizations aiming to foster sustainability. The article is accessible here .
