DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte and the publisher Tinta-da-China are pleased to announce the launch of the book Mulheres, Terra e Revolução, authored by Rita Calvário (DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte) and Cecília Honório (CHAM-NOVA FCSH).
The event will take place on 24 April 2026 at 7:00 PM, at Casa Capitão in Lisbon, and will be preceded at 6:00 PM by the screening of a documentary of the same name, directed by the authors.
Following the screening, the book will be presented by Fernando Oliveira Baptista, Emeritus Full Professor at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (Lisbon) and a key figure during the Revolution. As Minister of Agriculture in 1975, he played a pivotal role in drafting the Agrarian Reform laws and in supporting farmers’ movements.
Part of the project Gendered power relations in agriculture: how rural women are facing gender inequality and struggling for more just and sustainable agri-food systems – the case of Portugal, the book 'Mulheres, Terra e Revolução' (Women, Land, and Revolution) reveals how the April Revolution reached rural Portugal, giving voice to the women who, from the North to the South, fought for land, for rights, and for more dignified lives. Between the large estates of the South and the family farming of the North, these women organized, resisted the dictatorship, took part in the Agrarian Reform, and transformed their communities. Drawing on both written sources and oral testimonies, the book recovers silenced histories and shows how rural women were active protagonists in the revolutionary process. Through a gender perspective, it highlights continuities, ruptures, and the construction of women’s political identities, revealing that ‘they were there too’ — and that their contribution is essential to understanding the Revolution in the rural world.
