Abstract: We use an original dataset to examine the impact of informal and flexible contractual arrangements on wages of a sample of domestic workers hired by private employers in Portugal. All arrangements should be formal involving declaration of employment relationship to social security authorities. Our results suggest formality benefits workers whether they have stable or flexible contract. However, social and labour market processes help shape and maintain inequality, especially for migrant workers. Specific and general skills are undervalued and are unable to generate rewards. Compensation was identified for contingent work, multiple employers and elderly caregivers but this hides exploitation and insecurity..

Based on research the Beja Youth House of Culture, by Hestnes Ferreira Architect, we will present the building space as a cultural heritage for the city. Inspired by innovative, social and cultural values, the purpose of its creation was to meet a more democratic culture based on a community model and active participation. The purpose of this article is to present assumptions about the value of the built heritage, which can promote the emergence of Cultural and Creative Industries in small cities. This article starts from the conceptually of Cultural and Creative Industries and the relations between place and creativity that drive the phenomenon of the Creative Cities. Although the concept of Creative Cities has arisen in association with large urban cities, in this qualitative research we will observe the creativity associated to small cities and/or rural characteristics and the contribution of architecture in this context. Following we will relate the Architecture, as subsector of the Cultural and Creative Industries, with the social and cultural dynamics of a territory. Finally, based on the innovative and differentiating purposes of the architecture and the creation of the building, we present activities that articulate the action of the cultural actors with the local communities. This article is in line with Architecture and the inherited city. - Between the Shadow and the Geometry of Light: Hestnes Ferreira in continuity with Louis Kahn
Title: Saraiva, A.(2017), Between the Shadow and the Geometry of Light: Hestnes Ferreira in continuity with Louis Kahn, Kine[SiS]tem - From Nature to Architectural Matter, Lisboa, JUL 19-30, 2017. Date: 2017 Publisher: Kine[SiS]tem - From Nature to Architectural Matter Link: https://ciencia.iscte-iul.pt/publications/-between-the-shadow-and-the-geometry-of-light-hestnes-ferreira-in-continuity-with-louis-kahn/37938 Publication type: Publication in conference proceedings Research Project: SFRH/BPD/111869/2015 Abstract: This paper intends to show the relevance of light in the work of Louis Kahn and in the work of Hestnes Ferreira in formal and perceptive terms. Raúl Hestnes Ferreira (Lisbon, 1931) is a Portuguese architect who had the privilege of studying and working with Louis I. Kahn between 1963 and 1965. Light, although an external and contingent element of architecture, is a decisive element in terms of definition and perception. Therefore, four works by each architect are compared and analyzed. The results help to highlight the importance of light and shadow in the determination of architectural spaces and how silence enhances the perception of Hestnes Ferreira and Louis Kahn spaces.
- El Proyecto Troika en Portugal: media, resistencia y vulnerabilidad
Title: Rodrigues, V., Diz, H., Santos, M.J.(2017) El Proyecto Troika en Portugal: media, resistencia y vulnerabilidad, Palabra Clave, 20 (1): 188-212. Research Group: Governance, Economy and Citizenry Date: 2017 Publisher: Palabra Clave Link: http://palabraclave.unisabana.edu.co/index.php/palabraclave/article/view/6073 Publication type: Scientific journal article Research Project: N.A.
