INNOVATION, KNOWLEDGE AND LABOUR 1.1. Innovation and Knowledge This TL conducts research on the emergence and deployment of high-tech sectors in Portugal; the creation and diffusion of new technologies; the formation of start-ups; the innovation strategies of technology-intensive firms; the skills required for innovation; the role of new technologies in shifting to a low carbon regime; the upgrading of the Portuguese pattern of specialization; the diffusion and impact of ICT on traditional sectors; the mobility of scientists and the careers of young researchers. There are 5 research programmes: A. Dynamics of production and circulation of scientific knowledge; B. Emergence and diffusion of new technologies; C. Knowledge-intensive ecosystems in new fields; D. Relations between innovation and creativity; E. Labour organization, learning and firms’ innovative patterns. 1.2 Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations The Labour TL goals are to further the theoretical and conceptual framework of wage and contractual flexibility in order to assess wage and contractual flexibility more precisely and reassess the labour market segmentation hypotheses; to improve knowledge about the perception and practices of employers regarding wage and contractual regulations; to analyze the impact of wage and contractual regulations on employment and the working conditions of young and older people, migrants and temporary workers; to examine the extent to which labour market institutions protect temporary workers; and to study the way in which vulnerable workers engage in collective action. 4 research programmes are defined in the scope of this Thematic Line for the period. O evento associa-se ao projeto ARTSBANK desenvolvido pelo DINAMIA’CET-IUL do ISCTE IUL e pretende explorar a ótica de reaproveitamento dos espaços industriais de forma efémera, trabalhando especificamente sobre lugares e atividades e ao mesmo tempo sobre os valores e significados que estes podem adquirir aos olhos das pessoas. Na conferência “Art Time City” discutem-se temas tais como: a regeneração urbana; relação entre intervenções artísticas; eventos urbanos; arquitetura; espaço público; temporalidade. No workshop ARTSBANK, destinado a stakeholders, será apresentado o projeto a agentes institucionais e artísticos da Margem Sul. Os artistas Andrea Brandão, Chiara Campanile e João Vilhena vão intervir no espaço interagindo com a realidade existente e criando novas realidades. Estas intervenções vão ser acompanhadas por uma seleção fotográfica sobre espaços industriais, do fotógrafo Roberto Conte que pela primeira vez expõe as suas fotografias em Portugal. Numa perspectiva de colaboração com a Baía Tejo, os visitantes poderão ainda apreciar as obras-estudo realizadas por Vhils, artista natural do Seixal. É sócio do Una Arquitetos desde sua fundação em 1996. :::: Johan Lagae Johan Lagae is a full Professor at Ghent University and currently teaches 20th century architectural history with a focus on the non-European context. He obtained his PhD degree in 2002 with a study of 20th century colonial architecture in the former Belgian Congo. He spent two months in 2007 as a Chercheur invité de la Fondation de France at the Institut National de l’Histoire de l’Art (INHA) in Paris. He was on the editorial board of OASE for seven years. Together with Mercedes Volait (INHA, Paris), he led the European Community-funded COST-action IS0904 project ‘European Architecture beyond Europe’ from 2010 to 2014. His research interests include colonial and postcolonial architecture; urban planning and urban history in (Central) Africa; colonial-built heritage; and colonial photography. He has published articles in Cahiers Africains, the Journal of Architecture and Third Text, among others. He has also authored and edited several books. The aim is to: - Analyze the functioning of the creative structures supported by DGArtes, their dynamics of artistic work, their logics of organization and the distribution and territorial impact of their activity; - Regularly monitor all information on structures in order to provide ongoing feedback to stakeholders and the general public (by promoting the accountability of DGArtes activity); - Promote an informed reflection on the design of public policies (equating and discussing possible criteria to be adopted for the logics of public funding to the artistic sector). Research Group Innovation and Labour Website: n.a. Presentation: This project investigated the role of technology platforms from science in the generation of variety and the mechanisms and processes by which it can be effectively exploited, that is, to generate new market opportunities and lead to economic growth. The aim was to address a crucial problem of intermediate development economies, where the weak capacity to realize the effective exploitation of new technological opportunities, translating them into a variety of innovative activity, is an obstacle to the development of science-based industries. It is also proposed that technology platforms emerging from science can play an important role in creating interdependencies, since they are spaces that foster the generation of variety and at the same time provide a focussing device to exploit this variety. This latter aspect is particularly critical in intermediate economies and therefore the project places special emphasis on the way in which the exploitation of variety can be achieved and on the role of different mechanisms of interdependence creation, ie the development of upstream links ) and downstream (market). The development process of the biomedical industry in Portugal was chosen as the empirical context. The analysis focused on how the processes of developing interdependencies lead to variety, producing technological and market outcomes and on the role of new models of value creation and appropriation in these processes. This exploratory research will also allow us to test, validate and improve our approach, providing a robust theoretical and methodological tool that can later be applied to the analysis of the industry as a whole. Research Group Cities and Territories Website: n.a. Presentation: This project aims to analyze the general change of the social and urban structure of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (LMA), during the four decades within the census between 1970 and 2011. This is an analysis based on the main variables of the social composition of the resident population and housing structure. The specific goals of the project are: i) the analysis of residential mobility flows crossing the LMA in the last two decades of the 20th century and the first of the 21st century (1981-2011) and ii) the detailed study of the social recomposition of the metropolis center - the municipality of Lisbon -, in this period. The central hypothesis of the project contends that the transformation of social and urban structure has resulted in processes of gentrification within the metropolis centre, with different modalities and different territorial expressions, throughout that period. What this project intends to achieve is, precisely, the categorization of those processes through a statistical analysis of the behavior of the main social composition variables in long term (40 years), complemented by qualitative observation of intense social changes in Lisbon within the last decade.
