- Food-pics-PT: Portuguese validation of food images in 10 subjective evaluative dimensions
Title: Prada, M., Rodrigues, D., Garrido, M., Marcelino, J. (2017) Food-pics-PT: Portuguese validation of food images in 10 subjective evaluative dimensions, Food Quality and Preference, 61, DOI: 10.1016/j.foodqual.2017.04.015: 15-25. Research Group: Governance, Economy and Citizenry Date: 2017 Publisher: Food Quality and Preference Link: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0950329317301003 Publication type: Scientific journal article. Research Project: N.A. Abstract: This work presents subjective ratings for a sub-set of 210 food images selected from food-pics (Blechert, Meule, Busch, & Ohla, 2014). Our main goals were to provide further validation to this database, using a sample from a different nationality (N = 307 Portuguese volunteers, M = 34.67 years old, SD = 13.49) and to extend the number of subjective dimensions used to evaluate each image. In an online survey, each stimulus was evaluated by a minimum of 30 participants regarding arousal, familiarity, valence, liking, frequency of consumption, caloric content, healthiness, tastiness, desire to eat and perceived level of transformation. Ratings in these dimensions were compared according to caloric density (low vs. high caloric density), degree of processing (whole vs. processed food), and gustatory quality (sweet vs. savory), as well as food category (beverages, cereals, fruits, proteins, sweets, vegetables and meals). Overall, our results were consistent with those reported in the original database, although some cross-cultural differences were observed. Descriptive data for each stimulus across evaluative dimensions (means, standard deviations, and confidence intervals) is available as Supplementary material at https://osf.io/av6he/. The validation of standardized food images is useful for several research domains (e.g., food perception; eating behavior) and interventions with normative and clinical populations.
- Projeto de recuperação e conservação do Parque Nacional da Gorongosa: Paisagem Natural versus Cultur
Pedro Lemos Cordeiro Research Group: Cities and Territories Supervisor(s): José Luís Saldanha Summary In this work, the Project of «Restoration of Gorongosa National Park» is taken as an example of the relevancy of the architect’s role in human territorial interventions and as a privileged player in improving the interrelations of the various areas of knowledge that take part in the transformation of the landscape, whether cultural or «natural». Taking into account the need of an overall interpretation of the data of a given territory and the multifarious wishes of its actors, the architect applies the basic requirements of its discipline as a natural result of his allembracing field of knowledge. Thus, by isolating the most relevant themes in the process of the restoration and conservation of the Gorongosa National Park, the architect takes the first step towards the sinergetic planning of the actions in hand, giving primacy to the ecological balance between the culture and its social sustainability. The result is a comprehensive research which conveys a methodological hypothesis for an overall understanding of the issue, with its own virtues and shortcomings, as well as an «architectural» proposal, constructed by means of a disciplinary network, aiming for an enduring full equilibrium Period: 2011 - 2013 Resources: http://hdl.handle.net/10071/10466

- Extreme Cold Conditions Architecture - An Antarctica's Shelter Prototype
Title: Bulhões, D., Rato, V., Guedes, M.C. (2017), Extreme Cold Conditions Architecture - An Antarctica's Shelter Prototype, Kine[SiS]tem - From Nature to Architectural Matter, Lisboa, JUL 19-30, 2017. Date: 2017 Publisher: Kine[SiS]tem - From Nature to Architectural Matter Link: https://ciencia.iscte-iul.pt/publications/extreme-cold-conditions-architecture---an-antarcticas-shelter-prototype/37793 Publication type: Publication in conference proceedings Research Project: N.A. Abstract: Nowadays, when performing expeditions to the most remote places in Antarctica, scientists typically use tents as shelters. These tents, albeit being very portable and easy to assemble, lack the structural stability to withstand the harsh conditions of the Antarctic environment. Therefore, this paper pursues to conceive a novel shelter prototype that, more adequately, protects and lodges the researchers in their scientific missions in this icy continent, all the while maintaining a focus on portability and sustainability. In a first stage, some facts about the Antarctic continent are presented, likewise its significance to Science and our species. Secondly, a mobile base, inspired by a yurt, conceived within the framework of POLAR LODGE (a subproject of the Portuguese Polar Program), is analysed. The paper then focuses on a brief review on aerodynamics, seeking to comprehend the interaction of shapes and air flow, so that the design performance requirements related to strong winds are better understood. Finally, in a second stage, based on the previous researches, two different paradigms of a portable base are exposed and the final prototype is conceived and presented alongside a brief discussion of its constitution, assembly methods, materials and techniques.
- Raul Lino - Arquitectura e Paisagem (1900-1948)
Paulo Manta Pereira Research Group: Cities and Territories Supervisor(s): Paulo Tormenta Pinto, Ana Vaz Milheiro Summary In this research on Raul Lino we read its architecture as also the construction of landscape, unusual purpose given that the readings on the author has focused on its domestic architecture. Exceptions have been that contextualize its action and work among peers in the arts, in urban planning or thecul restoration and conservation of cultural heritage, however we refused to foreclosure because the demand discipline of the author covers these and other domains in the same spiritual conception of architecture. Sat down in his purpose of recovery of the landscape, i.e. the recovery of lost continuity between the architecture and its circumstances, the goal of this thesis. We defined the investigation between 1900, when it was published his project of portuguese pavilion for the international exhibition of Paris and 1948, the year that produced the opinion of the protection zone of the National Palace of Sintra, a year before retiring by age limit at the service of the state. This temporal delimitation coincided with important milestones in the history of modern architecture in Portugal. In 1900 Ventura Terra spread among us in the detachment of track progressive averse to tradition and in 1948 the modern orthodoxy with Keil do Amaral to bow, ratified in the theses of the first National Congress of Architecture in 1948, the doctrine of the Athens Charter of 1933. We believe, that this thesis reveals that the landscape in Raul Lino is like yours, lifelong testimony of a work of beauty. This sense that today, in hypermodernity, we urgently need more than ever recover. Period: ... - 2013 Resources: http://hdl.handle.net/10071/5917
- Performance-based Selection of Sustainable Construction Solutions for External Walls
Title: Veludo, S., Rato, V. (2017), Performance-based Selection of Sustainable Construction Solutions for External Walls, Global Dwelling: Approaches to sustainability, design and participation, K. Hadjri, L. Madrazo, ISBN: 978-1-78466-219-6. Date: 2017 Publisher: WIT Press Link: https://ciencia.iscte-iul.pt/publications/performance-based-selection-of-sustainable-construction-solutions-for-external-walls/30522 Publication type: Book chapter Research Project: N.A. Abstract: This research is focused on the integration of sustainability and functional performance in architecture. While having an important contribution in terms of environmental impact, construction solutions also play a significant role in the reduction of energy use during the use phase of buildings. Therefore a careful, although simple, analysis of construction solutions integrating environmental and functional performance is needed to support the decision process in architectural design. A simplified methodology, using an environmental indicator and an energy-related functional indicator is implemented to assess how a set of construction solutions for external walls would perform in face of different objectives. The environmental indicator is obtained through the aggregation of the individual normalized values for the embodied energy and the carbon footprint. The functional indicator characterizes the energy performance of the wall, by aggregating the individual normalized values of the heat transfer coefficient and the net superficial thermal mass. These indicators are then integrated in a final weighted index to allow for a straightforward, yet effective understanding of the environmental impact of functional construction solutions. The set of construction solutions comprises different materials for cavity as well as single walls that are common in the building construction sector: ceramic brick masonries, reinforced concrete, mortar render and plasterboard as internal coating, synthetic or natural materials applied in two thicknesses for thermal insulation. Different combinations of these materials form the set of 90 heavyweight external walls that were calculated. Results show that it is possible to select construction solutions with a good environmental and functional performance. There is however a conflict between the objectives of reducing embodied environmental impact and increasing thermal inertia. This later may be an important comfort factor in the cooling season in residential architecture. The proposed methodology can be a comprehensive support tool to architects at the moment of selecting construction solutions, so that the principles of a sustainable construction are increasingly becoming a reality in architectural design.

- Regeneração urbana em áreas pós-industriais: o caso da zona ribeirinha oriental de Lisboa entre o PD
Ana Nevado Research Group: Cities and Territories Supervisor(s): Paula André Summary The PhD thesis problematizes urban regeneration through the re-functionalization of the urban patrimony, in the light of urban planning and management, using as a case study the eastern riverside area of Lisbon and the public and private interventions carried out in this area. It considers the evolutionary process of the case study and the urban overlap of the territory until the contemporaneity, highlighting the current panorama of urban decline. Temporally, it is by the Master Plan of the Lisbon Region (1964) and by the Municipal Master Plan of Lisbon (1994), parallel to the AML globalization and metropolization phenomena. The Integrated Conservation Plan is explored and prospective ways of managing the contemporary urban space with a municipal approach are explored. Period: 2011-2017 Resources: N.A.
