    Pedro da Luz Pinto Research Group: Cities and Territories Supervisor(s): Paulo Tormenta Pinto Summary The curriculum harmonization of European courses, converging for a European Higher Education Area by the so called Bologna Process (1999-2010), relocated the debate on specificity of education in architecture, and its traditional methodology of learning by design, within the University environment. In Portugal, the architect’s basic training embraces a university level education and a one year professional internship, organized by the Architects Association. It requires a Master degree, acquired in a double cycle of three and two years of schooling, and which introduces the future architects to an increasingly diverse field of practices, and compromises research as an educational purpose. Schools reconcile research centers, associated or not to other areas of knowledge, developing graduate courses and research "projects", targeting additional funding and producing "academic" work, which would become the basis of individual and institutional assessment, pressing the university professionalization. In education, career teachers can be both designers, teachers and researchers, and the curricula’s are modeled, reducing the hours of teacher-student contact, for the benefit of a learning model based on student’s autonomous work. Altogether, the pressure for structural and conceptual transformation, the professionalization and the urgency of knowledge production and financing, provide a change of pedagogy and didactics of teaching. Deepening this background, this thesis approaches the structural, organizational and curricular developments, a group of Portuguese architectural schools, describing the changes raised by the Bologna Process and inquiring to what extent they present a change to the organization, the contents and the significance of traditional teaching of the architectural design. Abstract: How healthcare is being administered is nowadays one of the distinctive traits expressing the progress of a given society. The steadfast implementation of e-health services has become an indispensable tool in order to bring the provision of healthcare to the next level. Notwithstanding e-health’s actual and promising applications, e-health hinges on highly sensitive information on patients’ personal lives and even intimacy, which, in Member States of the European Union (EU), must comply with the pertinent personal data protection legislation. In effect, health data have been classified as a special category of personal data by Directive 95/46/EC, the Data Protection Directive (DPD). The DPD subjects the processing of personal health data to a specific, stronger protection compared to less sensitive personal data in the form of a prohibition, which can only be excepted when the data subjects grant their explicit consent to the processing or if such consent is overridden by a superior interest provided by the law. Aware of the major changes brought about by technological progresses in this field, the EU initiated in January 2012 a revision of the DPD. Eventually, Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation) were published in May 2016, to be applicable as of spring 2018. Regulation 2016/679 displays an even greater carefulness with the safeguard of health data than the DPD. Yet, it is unclear whether this legal reform is up to the challenge of current technological developments, particularly, as so-called big data technologies advance. Notwithstanding the impulse that the EU is placing on e-health and cross-border cooperation, e-health systems are developing primarily at the domestic level. In this article, we will seek to review and compare different e-health platforms now operating under the public health system of a EU member state, Portugal, with a specific focus on how the legal protection of personal data is being configured for each of them. Given the growing importance of big data in the field of health, we extend our comparative endeavour to this emerging phenomenon.

Abstract: The proposed paper will present a summary of the results of a innovative multidisciplinary architecture course that introduce students to emerging fields, anticipating the paradigm shift on how architects will address the professional in the world crossed by profound changes in economic, social, cultural and technological areas. People in complex urban settings embrace patterns of coexistence and social inclusion and they tend toward cooperation or conflict. So, the real challenge of the future is: how can people live better through their active participation and contribution to the future of the cities? And How concepts such as DIY (do it yourself) or DIWO (do it with others) are emerging as a new means of small collective movements in cities can be embraced? These transformations assume multiple forms and involve diverse actors and tools. Technologies are reshaping social relations and constituting new collaborative learning spaces (Latham & Sassen, 2005).

Architect, PhD student in Architectural and Urban Design and Planning (XXXI cycle) and teaching assistant at the Department of Architecture of the University of Florence. He graduated from the School of Architecture of the University of Florence with a thesis entitled “AMNESÌA_ Il Mediterraneo di Taranto” (thesis supervisor: Prof. M. Pivetta). He began his PhD degree in 2015 at the same University and his research concerns the reconstruction of the traces of the Mediterranean image and of its phenomenology, in the search for the possible existence of a meta-Mediterranean landscape, through a dissertation in Architectural Design (supervisors: Prof. F.
