- Three Essays on the Global Financial Crisis
Diptes Bhimjee Research Group: Governance, Economy and Citizenry Supervisor(s): Sofia Ramos, Emanuel Leão Summary The present Doctoral Thesis is comprised of three empirical essays addressing the Global Financial Crisis of 2007 – 2008. The said essays analyse distinct, but interconnected issues pertaining to this fundamental research topic. In the first paper, a careful examination is conducted in order to ascertain whether the ‘Subprime’ Crisis in the U.S.A. might have been duly forecasted using publicly available data. This hypothesis is confirmed by using two distinctive methodologies applied to a set of financial indicators, which independently confirm the predictability of the said financial shock. The second paper addresses the degree of heterogeneity of banking responses in forty two countries in the wake of the Global Financial Crisis. By employing a novel methodology – the Heterogeneous Regime-Switching Model (HRSM) –, representative country banking institutions worldwide are deemed to have had quite distinctive and heterogeneous responses to the onset of the global systemic event under scrutiny, and these responses may be grouped according to certain clusters. The third paper addresses the impact of the Global Financial Crisis upon the Euro Area and corresponding sovereign debt schedules. An updated academic survey is first conducted regarding the topic of the impact of excessive Member States’ sovereign debt in the wake of the systemic breakdown. The survey is followed by an empirical study using quadratic econometric specifications demonstrating that the over-accumulation of sovereign debt in the Euro Area is strongly associated with the diminishment of output growth in the latter Area, and that sound sovereign debt thresholds in key Euro Area Member States have been unwisely breached.
João Paulo Delgado Research Group: Cities and Territories Supervisor(s): Paulo Tormenta Pinto Summary Taking the study of “Ars Arquitectos” work as its foundation, this thesis aims at presenting an integrated view of 1930s Portugal architectural modernity. The main goal is to incorporate scopes usually presented as disconnected, such as those of cultural, ideological and technological nature. “Ars Arquitectos” was an architectural team formed by António Fortunato Cabral (1903-1978), Mário Soares Morais (1908-1975) and Fernando da Cunha Leão (1909-1990). Together, they have designed a number of significant projects in the northern region of Portugal. What distinguishes these architects as relevant in the Portuguese architectural scene is the confluence of three factors, difficult to find simultaneously: a proximity with some of the most prominent artists and art critics of their generation; an affinity with the right-wing opposition to the existing regime; finally, a close collaboration with some of the best Portuguese civil engineers. Through the study of three selected buildings, this thesis seeks to understand how the introduction of new building technologies clashed with both cultural and ideological issues. At the same time, the thesis questions the true extent of the relationship between architecture and engineering in Portugal, on one hand, and architecture and political power on the other. To address these key issues, the thesis uses two complementary methodological approaches. The first approach assumes a contextualizing character in order to secure a historical and conceptual framework. The second approach, directly related with the selected projects, is based on a graphical analysis and an anatomic understanding of the buildings.
Ágata Dourado Sequeira Research Group: Cities and Territories Supervisor(s): João Pedro Nunes Summary This research reveals the mechanisms under which street art is produced in Lisbon, as a form of construction of public space in this specific metropolitan context. Specifically, the objective is to understand how a public space can be constructed through the ways in which it relates to the city and the art it features publicly – particularly, street art, artistic and expressive manifestation of ephemeral nature. Being street art, at the present moment, the object of several distinct interventions in Lisbon, through not only the individual initiative of artists, but also through the programming efforts of associations, projects and the municipality, the hypothesis underlying this research is that the analysis of these contexts of production of street art in this metropolitan ambit allows to reveal not only different forms of conceiving and constructing the public urban space, but also tensions and conflicts about it. Therefore, this dissertation aims to focus on the processes of production of street art in Lisbon, based on a field work that, besides an extensive image and documentation collection, includes also a set of long interviews not only to the artists, to which the street is the main context of their artistic interventions, but to other actors connected to the programming of street art initiatives. Likewise, it will be possible to construct a reflexion about the mechanisms through which street art, as an opportunity these new contexts of production allow, and as specific ambit of creativity, connects with the construction of an artistic career, with the world of contemporary art and its markets.
