- AICA Architecture Award 2016
Pedro Machado da Costa was awarded by AICA - The International Association of Art Critics, in the category of Architecture with the project Luís de Freitas Branco High School in Paço d'Arcos. About Luís de Freitas Branco High School Luís de Freitas Branco High School is located in a suburban area, in a territory previously occupied by agricultural land. Over the last few decades, the area has undergone major changes, with the construction of highways, residential buildings and shopping centers, which profoundly alter the landscape. The School, originally opened in the late 1970s, was built around prefabricated pavilions, set in a steep terrain. Over time, with the consolidation of the urban fabric, the perimeter of the school was surrounded by buildings, nullifying its relationship with the street. The accesses and the internal circulations were difficult, and the pavilions were obsolete. The project takes advantage of the structure of some of the pre-existing pavilions - which are remodeled to accommodate regular teaching classrooms - by reorganizing the school's functional structure around two outer spaces: the Patio and the Playground. The boundaries of these spaces are defined by two new buildings - the Central Building and the Pedagogical Building - that establish the internal and external circuits. Circulations are considered the most important spaces of the new school, and can be used as places to study, to eat, to rest. The main entrance of the complex is redesigned, in order to reestablish the relationship between the School and the street. With the completion of the renovation works, there is an improvement in the academic results, an exponential increase of the student community, and the use of the school by the community. #PedroMachadodaCosta #Notícias #TOP #Arquitecture #Award #AICA

- Summer School
DINÂMIA'CET-IUL is delighted to announce the 1st Summer School on the Island of São Miguel, where it has a long-term interuniversity collaboration with University of Azores, a partnership that allows students to study the first two years of their master’s degree in architecture there. "Moytirra 2017, Sketch design for deep-sea mining labor's housing" in partnership with the University of Azores. The Summer School includes Master-Classes, studio sessions and field trips, led by lecturers and researchers from ISCTE-IUL and University of Azores (Portugal), Northeastern and Dartmouth College (USA), Kuwait University (Kuwait) and University of Waterloo (Canada), with the support of local architectural offices. On 5th day, the final results of the workshop will be presented and discussed with the local community. This summer school will work upon the challenges posed by the recent events and controversies arisen from the possibility of Portuguese governmental permissions for deep see mining exploitation, in exchange for economic compensations. This perspective places the Azorean Islands at the center of potential economic and social transformations, with landscape, urban and architectural impacts that are now intended to be anticipated and debated, through planning and development of an emergency housing scenario for the local fishing community. The workshop will take place from 2nd to 6th of September 2017 at the University of Azores and the Center for Contemporary Art of Ribeira Grande, both projects by some of the most prestigious contemporary Portuguese architects. In a setting of incomparable beauty and in a transdisciplinary and transnational education environment, suited for important pedagogical experiences, it is hoped that this experience may contribute to a relevant body of research, not only for the Azorean society, but also for a broader debate on the subject. His book, Architecture, Computing and the Second World War. From Crystallography to Digital Research in Architecture, will be published by Routledge in Spring 2018. rjoao@uevora.pt Spaceworkers The spaceworkers® project arises from a common desire of the three mentors, Carla Duarte, Henrique Marques and Rui Dinis, to create a “brand” capable of representing a horizontal approach across fields as diverse as Architecture, Economics, Design and Furniture, proving to be possible and even recommendable to all these different areas. As a creative workshop, we seek to instill in our work a touch of innovation and sensory excitement, appealing to the sensibilities of its customers to a new way of viewing space as an instrument of communication, planning and interaction with public sentiment. We believe that the proposals made by spaceworkers ® seek to meet the needs of its clients, avoiding the obvious, seeking a path where form clearly follows emotion. It also seeks a compromise between the formal and functional options and the overall cost of the work, because we believe it is precisely this balance that grounds the added value of our work. geral@spaceworkers.pt Campos Costa arquitetos Campos Costa Architects was found at the end of 2007 as an interdisciplinary research and development practice to inform architectural design. Our rigorous approach to architecture drives decision making amongst design teams and suppliers with the aim of creating an integrated project. Our portfolio of work has developed and delivered projects at different scales, from buildings to household furniture. Each of these projects is the result of detailed study of construction processes, systems and materials that validates its cultural and social significance. (R)innovate Tradition is a clear statement of sustainability that explicitly engages social, cultural and environmental concerns. It seeks to adopt innovative technology, such as eco-materials and low emission technology, as well as passive design principles. It takes the position that promoting resilience at the local scale is key to addressing the global environmental challenges of today. Campos Costa Architects successfully delivered the Lisbon Aquarium extension, the Portuguese Environment Agency Headquarters extension, the Quarteira´s Seafront and Municipal Market. We have also developed several projects in the fields of art and scenography, including the 13 longue Chair, in Interni Mutant architecture & Design – Salone del Mobile, Milano.
