  • Rita Calvário at the International Workshop ‘Transforming Agri Food Systems in Rural/Urban Contexts'

Rita Calvário , researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, will participate as guest speaker at the International Workshop ‘Transforming Agri Food Systems in Rural/Urban Contexts' , which will take place at the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut, Berlin, on July 10th and 11th, 2025.   TRANSFORMING AGRI FOOD SYSTEMS IN RURAL/URBAN CONTEXTS Agri-food system changes concerning issues of sovereignty, justice, democracy, environment/climate, labor, and health, among others, demand academic attention and effective political action. In particular, the transition of agri-food systems towards agroecology involves reorganising rural/urban relationships that have structured cities and their surroundings up to now. Land use competition and speculation, low incomes for farmers and workers, the stagnation of food and environmental policies, and the concentration of power in the food industry and among retailers all pose significant challenges for initiatives seeking to transform situated food systems towards agroecology. In the public conference and one-day workshop, we aim to bring together scholar activists and NGOs from different countries involved in the transformation of food systems and rural-urban linkages to comparatively analyse theoretical perspectives and debates, land and distribution policies, alternatives, and concrete experiences driving changes towards agroecology, food sovereignty, and food justice. • Rita Calvário at the International Summer School of Political Ecology 2025 'Strategies for a Just Green Transition'

Rita Calvário , researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, will participate as a guest lecturer at the International Summer School of Political Ecology 2025 'Strategies for a Just Green Transition' , which will take place at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, from June 30 to July 4.   STRATEGIES FOR A JUST GREEN TRANSITION How can we implement a just green transition? This is a question we frequently pose, yet rarely explore in sufficient depth to answer it with a proper strategy. Broadly, green transition strategies can be divided into a three-part framework: strategies of rupture and transition to eco-socialism; strategies for taming and reforming eco-modernisation; and strategies for building alternative social infrastructures that, at least partially, erode existing socio-environmental systems. Which social classes and groups can lead a just green transition, and what political form should they adopt to gain power? Can the competitive state be transformed into the green state? What role do decentralisation and regionalisation play in these efforts? Is there potential for convergence between workers’ and environmental struggles? How can we bridge the perspectives of the Global South and the Global North? Our Summer School aims to help strengthen strategic thinking, which should complement and build on utopian and critical approaches to the environmental crisis. + Info

  • Documentary by Rita Calvário and Cecília Honório at the Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Women’s Film Festival

The documentary Mulheres, Terra, Revolução (Women, Land, Revolution), authored by Rita Calvário (DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte) and Cecília Honório, will be screened at the Olhares do Mediterrâneo – Women’s Film Festival on October 28th at 6:00 p.m., at the Museu do Aljube. The documentary, which is part of the project Gendered power relations in agriculture: how rural women are facing gender inequality and struggling for more just and sustainable agri-food systems – the case of Portugal  (Rita Calvário / DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte), gives voice to rural women who were the silent protagonists of change. Through the testimonies of female farmers, cooperative members, and journalists, it unveils a story of resistance, the struggle for emancipation, and the construction of people's power, during a time when speaking — and acting — was, for many women, a revolutionary act. The session will include the presence of Rita Calvário and Cecília Honório, the film's directors, and Paula Godinho (Anthropologist,  IHC – Instituto de História Contemporânea / NOVA FCSH ).

  • Rita Calvário at the Socio-Ecological Transformation in Times of Regression Symposium

Rita Calvário , researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, will join the ‘Socio-Ecological Transformation in Times of Regression’ Symposium, as guest speaker. The symposium will be hosted by the University of Kassel on December 4 th  and 5 th , 2025.   In the context of multiple ecological, political-economic, and social crises, the question of socio-ecological transformation has taken on growing importance in both activist and scholarly debates in recent decades. However, recent global trends towards authoritarianism, nationalism, ultra-neoliberalism, and a renaissance of fossilism pose serious challenges to such transformation in many parts of the world, especially when it aims to be emancipatory, that is, radically democratic and inclusive.   The international symposium addresses these challenges from a multi-scalar and transnational perspective, taking into account multiple interrelated political-economic and socio-ecological reconfigurations. These include the deepening of ecological crises and the crisis of social reproduction; the emergence of a new geopolitical order shaped by intensifying rivalry between the US and China, the resurgence of the BRICS, and expanding global competition over strategic resources and markets in the name of national competitiveness; and a global tendency toward democratic regression and cultural backlash, visible in rising nationalism, anti-feminism, the proliferation of authoritarian orders, and the rise of the far right. • Arquitectura Aqui – Community, Proximity, Action: Collective Use Equipment in Portugal and Spain 1939-1985, with Ricardo Costa Agarez

On 18 November 2025, Ricardo Costa Agarez will present and discuss the Arquitectura Aqui  initiative ( https://arquitecturaaqui.eu/ ) at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, Building 4, Auditorium 306, at 6 P.M., marking the conclusion of the first semester of the Doctoral Programme in Architecture of Contemporary Metropolitan Territories 2025/2026. We all live, work, study and enjoy ourselves in spaces about which we know little. If we know more and better, and if this knowledge is built collectively – jointly by those who investigate the history and architecture of these spaces and by those who created and currently or formerly enjoyed them – we will be able to contribute to making informed decisions about which buildings and complexes we can maintain, reuse, and substitute. By knowing more, we can decide better how to update and perfect this heritage of collective enjoyment. The session will be particularly dedicated to discussing ways of strengthening the relationship between academic work and the sustainability of the built environment, highlighting the responsibility of architecture and all those involved in the formation of its epistemological basis in this matter. The Arquitectura Aqui  initiative is the outcome of two research projects: ReARQ.IB – Built Environment Knowledge for Resilient, Sustainable Communities: Understanding Everyday Modern Architecture and Urban Design in the Iberian Peninsula (1939-1985) , based at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, and ArchNeed – The Architecture of Need: Community Facilities in Portugal (1945-1985) , based at CIDEHUS – Centro Interdisciplinar de História, Culturas e Sociedades (Universidade de Évora). Ricardo Costa Agarez  is an architect (1996) and a historian of architecture and cities. He is currently a Principal Investigator at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. He is the Principal Investigator for the projects ReARQ.IB  and ArchNeed , and co-editor-in-chief of the scientific journal ABE Journal-Architecture Beyond Europe . As a researcher, his projects seek to integrate architecture, construction, cultural studies, and the social and human sciences. He specialises in the history and theory of architecture and urbanism of the 19th and 20th centuries, having written and published on: architecture and national and regional identities; phenomena of dissemination, hybridism, and transfer of architectural knowledge and practices between contexts; multi-family housing; architecture of public functions; architecture and philanthropy; alternative forms of knowledge expression in architecture; and architectural cultures in bureaucracy.

  • ‘A bomba-relógio da abstenção’ won the Data Journalism Award 2024 from Sociedade Portuguesa de Estatística

We are extremely proud to announce that t he project, ‘A bomba-relógio da abstenção’ (The Abstention Time Bomb), won the Data Journalism Award 2024 from the Sociedade Portuguesa de Estatística . ‘The Abstention Time Bomb’ is a data research project by ‘Divergente’, in partnership with the European Data Journalism Network (EDJNet) and the research centre DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte. The study involved the data analysis from 27 European countries over 50 years, mapping the electoral behaviour of over 350 million voters, identifying patterns and trends by cross-referencing electoral data with demographic and socioeconomic variables. In Portugal, the reporting conducted by DIVERGENTE in ten civil parishes with the highest levels of abstention brought to the surface the stories and challenges faced by local communities, allowing to understand the phenomenom beyond the sphere of statistics. The collaboration from DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte was led by researchers Margarida Perestrelo and Sebastião Ferreira de Almeida , who contributed methodological support and data analysis applied to the European territory.
