Yolanda Díaz, Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister of Labour and Social Economy, and Ana Mendes Godinho, former Portuguese Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, presented the book Governing Solidarity in European Labour Markets last Friday, 5 June, at Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa.
The event gained particular relevance in light of the current political landscape, with the debate being shaped by the general strike and the public discussion surrounding the new labour reform.
During the session, Yolanda Díaz delivered a clear warning in defence of workers' representation movements, stating that the labour reform constitutes a democratic regression and will negatively impact the Portuguese economy.
In a similar vein, Ana Mendes Godinho drew attention to the human dimension of employment and the dangers of its devaluation.
The publication, edited by researchers Paulo Marques (DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte), Rui Branco, Óscar Molina, and Renato Miguel Carmo, invites an in-depth analysis of the dynamics of solidarity and the challenges of labour markets in Europe, comparing the experiences of Portugal and Spain following the sovereign debt crisis and analysing the impact of labour laws and minimum wage increase policies on reducing precarious employment between 2015 and 2025.
