The chapter 'Salários dos Jovens em Portugal' (Youth Wages in Portugal), by Paulo Marques, Rita Guimarães and Alexandre Mergulhão has been published in the book Salário Digno em Portugal: Da necessidade à possibilidade de uma política, coordinated by José António Pereirinha and Elvira Pereira.

The wages earned by young people have become a topic of significant interest in public and academic debate in Portugal, particularly regarding the salaries of qualified youth. This is because, over the last two decades, there has been a deterioration in wages, specifically concerning the earnings of graduates. This chapter examines this topic in detail.

The main purpose of this chapter is to describe the evolution of youth wages over the 2002–2021 period, as well as the main indicators regarding labour income inequality. Furthermore, taking into account the academic literature on the subject, the chapter relates the issue of wages to a set of other dimensions, namely: education, economic sectors, and labour market institutions.
