Housing crisis report presented to the President of the Regional Government of the Azores

A meeting was held on 7 October at Palácio de Sant’Ana with the President of the Regional Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, to present the report A Crise da Habitação nos Açores (The Housing Crisis in the Azores). The document is the result of a process of reflection and collaborative work involving researchers, professionals, and civil society organizations, addressing one of the region’s most pressing social challenges.
The report identifies a structural housing crisis in the Azores and calls for integrated, long-term responses to strengthen the right to housing and contribute to more inclusive and sustainable regional development.
The document was presented by Nuno Costa, President of the Secção Regional dos Açores da Ordem dos Arquitectos (Azores Regional Section of the Order of Architects, OA.SRAZO), Fernando Diogo, from the Universidade dos Açores (University of the Azores), and Lídia Fernandes, from DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, representing the report’s coordinating team.
The meeting was also attended by the Regional Secretary for Employment, Youth and Housing, Maria João Soares Carreiro.
The report emerged from the interdisciplinary seminar A Crise da Habitação nos Açores (The Housing Crisis in the Azores), held in September 2025, which brought together academics, professionals, and civil society organizations to reflect on recent changes in the Azorean housing market and their social, territorial, and economic impacts.
The document is now publicly available and aims to contribute to democratic debate and the development of public policies in this field.
