Candidates enrolled and registered in the PhD Program in Urban Studies (a joint PhD program between Iscte and NOVA-FCSH) at Iscte can apply for research scholarships granted by Iscte:

  • Merit Scholarships – 2 scholarships available;

  • Annual Tuition Fee Waivers – 2 scholarships available.

The different types of scholarships aim to support the completion of work leading to a doctoral degree by developing the scientific and pedagogical skills of the PhD students.

Students who wish to obtain one of the four available scholarships within the PhD Program in Urban Studies must submit the following mandatory documentation:

a) Completion of the specific form (application form), available on the Iscte Recruitment page (https://recrutamento.iscte-iul.pt);

b) A research project proposal, which includes a state of the art and a development and execution plan, with a clear statement of objectives and motivation, following a structure similar to that used for FCT national PhD scholarship applications;

c) A minimum of two letters of recommendation from career academics and/or researchers who can attest to the interest and scientific contribution of the proposed project (in the case of the merit scholarship application, at least one of the letters must be from a career academic or researcher, and the second can be from a professional with recognized experience in the field of the doctorate to which the student is applying for the scholarship);

d) A letter of motivation, in which you must objectively explain the reasons for the scholarship application, including: i. Your availability for full-time dedication to the development of your doctorate; ii. The motivation behind pursuing the doctorate, indicating whether this fits within a perspective of professional enhancement or integration into an academic career; iii. Any other elements you consider relevant for the evaluation of the application, and that can demonstrate that you have the appropriate conditions to successfully complete the proposed project.

As this is a Joint PhD Program, requests for scholarship renewal can only be considered if students are supervised by an Iscte faculty member, are enrolled at Iscte in the academic year in which they request the renewal, and are integrated into an Iscte Research Unit associated with the Doctorate (DINÂMIA’CET, CIES, CRIA).

Candidates must submit their application on the platform (https://recrutamento.iscte-iul.pt) by September 10, 2025:
