On September 9th, at the Polytechnic University of Tomar (Portugal), Rolando Volzone presented the paper "Religious Heritage in Transformation | Transformative Religious Heritage: The Case of the Alentejo Region" at the first international conference "Heritage, Conservation, and Creativity: Cultural Heritage in Transformation." This event was organized by TECHN&ART – the Technology, Restoration, and Arts Enhancement Centre at the Polytechnic University of Tomar (IPT).
The paper focused on gaining a deeper understanding of the dynamics of Portuguese religious heritage, exploring its evolution over decades, and in some cases centuries, as well as its transformative potential for fostering integrated and sustainable development in rural and low-density regions.
Drawing from the convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça, one of the key case studies in the transHERITAGE initiative, the presentation proposed an alternative perspective on the future of monastic and conventual buildings. Instead of the common practice in Portugal of converting these heritage sites into tourist accommodations, the paper highlighted the potential of cultural and creative industries as a more sustainable option to reverse this trend.
