Geert P.J. Verbong (1955) is Associate Professor in the History of Technology at the Department of Technology Management at Eindhoven University of Technology.(TU/e) His specialisation is history of energy and environmental issues. He is head of the Subdepartment of Technology and Sustainability Studies and is also a part-time research coordinator at TELOS, the regional institute for sustainability issues at the University of Tilburg.
He studied physical engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (1981) and did his Ph.D. on innovations in Textile Printing and Dyeing in the Netherlands, als at TU/e (1988). He participated as an editor in a large project on the History of Technology in the Netherlands in the 19th century, published in 6 volumes between 1992-1995. The fifth volume on the history of technical education and the relation between Science and Technology was written by him. He also participated as a co-editor in a serial project on the History of technology in the 20th century. Currently he participates in the Dutch Knowledge Network on System Innovations and in the Networking Europe theme in the framework of the Tensions of Europe project.
He is the coordinator of the research program ‘Transition and transition paths: the road to a sustainable energy system’, funded in a NWO/Novem framework; this program is set up to encourage the cooperation between natural and social scientists (beta-gamma) in the field of energy research.
